Fort Myers Beach Hotel, Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina designated a Clean Marina on Fort Myers Beach, Once Again Demonstrates Commitment to Protecting the Environment

August 7, 2013
The Pink Shell Beach Resort’s new state-of-the-art marina has officially been designated a Clean Marina by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The Florida Clean Marina Program is a voluntary program that recognizes environmentally conscious marina facilities for their efforts to protect our waters and marina life. Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina is the 10th marina in Lee County, the 58th marina in Florida’s South District, and the 272nd in the State to achieve this designation.

The management team and staff at the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina first demonstrated their commitment to the environment in 2008 when they were designated as the 1st Green Lodging Property on the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel by the FDEP. When the decision was made to renovate the Fort Myers Beach marina in 2012, it was without question that the plan would be for a facility designed to protect and preserve Florida’s waters and coastline.

"We are excited the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina has been awarded this prestigious designation," says Bill Waichulis, VP of Operations at Boykin Management Company. "It’s an honor to be able to give back to the environment which has provided us with so much enjoyment. By doing this, we help to ensure future visitors and generations to come enjoy the beaches, wetlands and waters around the barrier islands of Southwest Florida."

To be nominated a Florida Clean Marina, a facility must demonstrate excellence in three categories; Environmental Management, Marina Environment Quality and Services. Criteria in each of these categories addresses critical environmental issues such as waste management, storm water control, emergency preparedness and access to drinking water. The marina must also have knowledgeable personnel on staff to provide visitors with environmental information. "As the 272nd Clean Marina in the state, Pink Shell has taken the initiative to implement environmentally-friendly practices at its facility and installing a new pumpout system for boaters," said DEP’s Clean Vessel Act Manager Brenda Leonard. "This is an example of environmental stewardship for marine facilities throughout Florida and we are proud to welcome them to the program." As a Clean Marina, the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina looks forward to building on their new partnerships with the Florida Clean Marina and Clean Boating to ensure they consistently demonstrate best practices of an environmentally conscious facility.
